Bookkeeper vs CPA: who should you call first?
Most owners need both at different times. Starting with clean books usually makes the CPA cheaper and faster.
Short answer
A bookkeeper keeps day-to-day records clean: categorizations, reconciliations, monthly close, and systems (QuickBooks, bank feeds, receipts). A CPA (or enrolled agent) handles tax strategy, filings, and representation.
East Mesa Bookkeeping is a bookkeeping and systems practice under Penguin Protect LLC. We are not a CPA firm. We prepare CPA-ready packages and can recommend tax professionals.
Simple decision tree
| Your situation | Call first |
|---|---|
| Bank feeds messy, months behind, no P&L you trust | Bookkeeper (cleanup / monthly) |
| Need a tax return filed or an IRS notice answered | CPA / enrolled agent |
| Setting up QuickBooks Online and banking for the first time | Bookkeeper (DIY setup + guidance) |
| Want year-end numbers ready for your tax pro | Bookkeeper → then CPA |
| Not sure what is broken | Books Health Check ($350) |
